How to Clean and Care for Your Louis V Handbags
Ok, so you’ve just combed through all the Louis V purses out there to try and find out which one is perfect for you. After deciding upon the Louis V Bag for you (let’s say, an LV Damier Speedy 30) and making the purchase, the first thing you need to know is how to care for your bag. Not enough people take this into consideration when buying Louis Vuitton and it’s a shame, because this is exactly how good bags go bad.
Here are the main things to remember when taking care of a Louis V bag:
- Monogram Canvas is NOT Waterproof
- Leather Care is EXTREMELY Important
- The Damier collection features a more durable leather that can actually be wiped. Take this into consideration when buying.
- Don’t let your bag sit in the closet too long because it will quickly dry out. Make sure the leather doesn’t dry and crack – if it starts to dry, get a specially made lotion.
While LV monogram and Damier canvas is coated, making it water resistant, it is not waterproof (there’s a key difference between the terms). So, if you are out and about and get a little bit of water on the canvas – no big deal, just wipe it off and the bag will be fine. However, you should NEVER immerse you bag in water. You can wipe your bag clean with a damp soapy cloth if it gets dirty.
Whether your bag is all leather (like the new Empreinte line) or has leather trim (like most LV canvas purses), leather care is key to the long life of Louis V purses. When you get your bag, the leather trim will be creamy beige. This leather will ‘honey’ over time – that’s exactly what you want. You should avoid carrying leather straps with your hands – this will leading to uneven honeying. Do not use chemical cleaners on your bag.
